Overview

A collaboration FSCM/CCC as and local summer camps with funding from the United Way of Central Mass.to work in Worcester area programs to improve  literacy supports and present a quality learning experience for children attending  summer programs. 

 

The position is for a literacy assistant to work with under the supervision of a Literacy Specialist with children at the elementary school level (Grades K – 6).  Each position is starting hourly rate of $20 per hour, for part-time hours for 8-9 weeks during the summer plus additional planning and meeting times in the summer and early fall.    

 

Work begins July to mid-August for up to 10 hours per week per site, and a few additional hours to attend training and planning meetings.

Responsibilities

Reports to the Summer Literacy Program Coordinator or Summer Literacy Specialist: 

  1. Work as a team with the assigned program site to plan for the summer and implement curriculum and literacy strategies.
  2. Model and mentor best practices for experiential thematic curriculum and literacy strategies including reading aloud, reading with children, independent reading, literacy games, journal writing.   
  3. Use literacy materials that link to thematic curriculum and materials that appeal to the age and interests of children in the program.
  4. Maintain and organize schedule at the sites and manage literacy resources and materials.
  5. Complete paperwork on attendance and participant demographics. Help conduct a pre- and post- literacy survey with children in the program.

Qualifications

Preferred:  Someone presently studying or working toward a career in education.  Individuals with a background providing tutoring or mentoring experiences will be considered. Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

  1. Commitment to working with urban, at risk children, including English language learners.
  2. Flexible hours and must provide own transportation to site.
  3. Some positions are face to face, must be willing to follow protocols for health and safety.
  4. Some positions are virtual tutoring, must have technology experience and willingness to work online with students.
